Curriculum
All classes from Year 1 – Year 6 have two P.E lessons a week, one outdoor and one indoor. During indoor lessons children will alternate between Dance and Gymnastics throughout the year. In KS1 we use Dance and Gymnastics to help children to begin performing dances using simple movement pattern, as well helping children to master basic movements. In KS2 we use Dance and Gymnastics to then develop these basic movements and improve flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance. At Alexandra Primary we have a range of gymnastics equipment which is used during curriculum lessons.
Our outdoor games lessons focus on a different sport every half term. The focus sports are as follows:
- Autumn 1: Netball
- Autumn 2: Football
- Spring 1: Basketball
- Spring 2: Hockey or cricket
- Summer 1 & Summer 2: Athletics and Tennis
These sports allow children to develop and master basic movements such as throwing, catching, running and jumping. They also allow children to participate and play competitive team games.
At Alexandra we are lucky to be working closely with Premier Sports. Every afternoon we have a specialised sports coach come into school to play sports with children at lunchtimes and also to support with the delivery of curriculum lessons. Because of this we have been able to offer opportunities for children to experience different sports during their curriculum lessons. KS1 and Reception learn ballet during their indoor dance lessons. Children are taught by a specialist ballet teacher who comes to Alexandra every Wednesday and Thursday morning. During Spring 1, Year 3 and Year 4 are able to experience playing handball during their outdoor games lessons and Year 6 are taught TAG rugby.
After-school clubs
After-school sporting clubs are incredibly popular at Alexandra Primary and we offer a range of after-school sports clubs. Our clubs are run by our sports coaches and are as follows:
Monday: KS1 multi-sports club (summer term) or KS1 gymnastics (Autumn & Spring term)
Tuesday: Archery club
Wednesday: KS2 multi-sports club (summer term) or KS2 gymnastics (Autumn & Spring term)
Thursday: Fencing club
Friday: KS2 girls football & boys football club
Our after-school clubs help develop children’s skills and provide them with extra opportunities to utilise these skills in a competitive environment. Our girls and boys football clubs take place at Heartlands School which is an excellent opportunity for the children to experience playing football on a larger, marked pitch.
Competitions
At Alexandra we try to compete in as many competitions as possible. Competitions are an excellent way for children to learn the values of team work as well as winning and losing. Competitions provide children with a chance to use learned skills in a competitive environment. It is also great for children experience playing sports at different venues and using full sized pitches. Children compete in the following sports:
- Girls football
- Boys football
- TAG rugby
- Dance
