It’s been a healthy start to Spring 2 at Alexandra Primary! I have spotted children from every year group enjoying such healthy snacks, many of which are pre-prepared (peeled and cut apples and grapes, bags of banana chips) so thank you to the adults for their forward thinking.

Hello! We hope you are well and staying active and healthy as much as possible considering the circumstances. If you are well, please go on the recommended daily walk – remember your sun cream (it is dazzling out there!) and your bottle of water to keep hydrated.
The Felix Project delivered some lovely vegetables on Tuesday so I tried to be creative and made vegetable tian.
Here’s how I did it….
Method
Sautee chopped onion and crushed garlic.
Once cooked, line the bottom of the dish.
Slice the vegetables and make a fancy pattern so your food looks as good as it tastes!
Sprinkle on some salt and herbs and brush a little oil over the top.
Bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 C.
Enjoy!
It’s a really tricky and testing time for everyone but sticking to a routine will help you. Try and go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Set a time you have to do your school work and do the same for relaxing and playing. Please do not spend all day attached to a computer/ipad/tv screen!
You may want to keep a diary. This is a good way to keep your mental health in check. Write down your thoughts and feelings – good or bad – and then you can move on.
Stay positive team Alexandra. We are in this together

This half term at Alexandra we have been trying to keep healthy and focused as always. The weather is getting a little warmer and the days a little brighter so please take advantage and go for a walk! You will still need you coat and maybe even a hat but enjoy the sunshine now it has finally appeared. Go to the park this weekend and fill your lungs with some fresh air.
Maybe you could try this recipe too – you could have it for breakfast lunch or dinner!

Being a healthy school doesn’t mean we just look after ourselves, we also look after our environment, our world! Climate change is a big focus in Year 6 at the minute and we challenge everyone at Alexandra to make small changes. We know everyone making small changes will lead to a big impact.
Last week, we celebrated World Book Week and Shay and Miss Mackey decided to re-cycle, re-use and get creative. Look at their home-made outfits! You don’t have to buy anything, you can use what you have (like a certain colour top) and invent your own costume. Big shout out to Shay and his family for their amazing design and artistic genius!

It has been brought to our attention that children have been bringing and eating unhealthy snacks to school. We do understand that at this time of year treats are everywhere but we are a Healthy and Sugar-Smart school! Please save your treats for the weekend to enjoy with your family. At school we have fruit and vegetables for snacks and water only. We ask all families to respect this. We are Rights Respecting School and Article 24 states: ‘Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must work to provide good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that children can stay healthy.’

It’s a busy half term and we need to make sure our brains are ready for learning. Here are some reminders about what food and drink to have and not to have in school:
Water only. Milk is provided by the school for Early Years.
Snacks are fruit and vegetables only.
Packed lunches: NO NUTS, NO CRISPS, NO CHOCOLATE.
Please provide your child with food such as: a sandwich or an alternative (like pasta), fruit, vegetables, yogurt.
If you are unclear please ask your child’s teacher for guidance.
Now it’s a little colder we can often feel more hungry. Alongside your dinner at home, why not make a salad for you and your family to share? You can even create your own dressing:
French Dressing
A classic recipe that everyone enjoys, made with oil and vinegar. This is the solid foundation of the salad dressing world. To make, whisk 1 tsp Dijon mustard with 2 tbsp white wine vinegar, 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of sugar and salt and pepper in a small bowl or shake together in a jam jar.
Miss Mackey loves a salad, check out her big bowl full of goodness, if you need any tips please ask her.

We are nearly at the end of the school year and as we are all tired and ready for a rest it’s even more important that we keep healthy minds and bodies. Make sure you are drinking enough water and getting lots of sleep also make sure you are eating healthy in order to feel your best.
Lots of supermarkets are promoting ‘The Super Six’. You get six pieces of fruit or vegetables for a set price. Marks and Spencer are selling 6 for 65p and Aldi for 45p – what a bargain! Please let Miss Mackey know if you see any other great offers when you’re out shopping.

Look at our lovely ladies in the office filling their bowl with yummy fruit. A great way to eat healthy and stay hydrated – did you know a watermelon is both a fruit and a vegetable?
Talking of watermelon, why don’t you try a watermelon side salad with your dinner this week.
Ingredients
Method
Chop 180g watermelon and ½ cucumber into chunks and tip into a bowl with the leaves from ½ bunch mint (reserving a few for garnish) and drizzle with 1 tbsp olive oil. Season and pile on to a serving plate. Crumble over 100g feta, the remaining mint leaves, then drizzle with 1 tbsp balsamic glaze just before serving.
If you try this, please let Miss Mackey know . If you can take pictures and show her maybe you can feature on our page.
The staff members that keep active by attending a netball club are: Miss Bruce and Miss Payne! Check them out. Why don’t you ask your teachers how they keep fit and healthy.
So many children have approached Miss Mackey to show off their healthy snacks. Taejon from Nicaragua class and Cyrus from Espana class have really impressed her with their brain-food, well done boys!
We have been speaking a lot about keeping our bodies healthy but remember we must also keeps our minds healthy. In Health, Fun and Fitness week, every class will discuss and participate in a PSHCE lesson based on mental health. What does that mean to you? If you’re not sure don’t worry. Keeping an eye on our mental health just means making sure we feel okay, positive and content in approaching each day – even when we aren’t feeling our best.
?Can you Guess?
Which staff member recently switch from wheat bread to rye bread (which is higher in fiber)? Tell Miss Mackey your answers…
Mrs Cannon in the staff room on Tuesday eating such a healthy lunch. No wonder Puerto Rico class are so clever, their teacher is full of energy!
It’s one of my favourite days of the year and a big event in the Mackey household but I did make an effort to try some healthier options this year. I used 0% fat Greek yogurt, grapes, pomegranate, pistachio, granola and honey. It was delicious! If you have any pancake mix left over try a healthy pancake and let me know what you think.
