Curriculum

The curriculum is the totality of pupils’ learning experiences. At Alexandra Primary School we believe that our curriculum should be broad, balanced and relevant and meet the needs of all children whatever their ability. Our curriculum also serves the important purpose of motivating and engaging children with their learning.

The taught curriculum is comprised of The National Curriculum and the wider curriculum. By developing our own schemes of work we have ensured that the children have a range of relevant learning experiences that challenge, stimulate and promote thinking and learning. The curriculum meets statutory requirements.

Reading and Phonics Programmes

At Alexandra we use the ‘Read Write Inc.’ phonics programme. Read Write, Inc. is a complete literacy programme taught for 20 – 40 minutes a day in Reception and an hour a day in Year 1 and above. It is proven to develop:
fluent, enthusiastic readers
deep comprehension of texts
confident speakers
keen writers.

Children are taught to:

  • learn to read and write letter-sound correspondences quickly
  • decode effortlessly, spell and handwrite easily
  • comprehend what they read
  • read with fluency and expression
  • write confidently using oral rehearsal
  • work effectively with a partner to articulate their learning at every step.

From Christmas in reception through to year 2 children are taught in groups, depending where they are up to in the programme. We have a Read Write Inc manager who assesses the children at regular intervals to ensure they are in the right group.

As in all schools, we have some pupils who need more support than most. Our rigorous assessment system identifies those who are at risk of falling behind their peers. These children are tutored for 15 minutes every day by our highly trained staff.

Children usually finish the Read, Write, Inc. programme during year 1, however if children still require support with their early reading and phonics we run some groups in Y2.
